Closing Fri 18 December

Save Acacia Ridge Kindy

Our 75-place childcare centre closes a week before Christmas. We want it handed to a new provider, not shut.

This weekend: photos + flyers

The media want photos of real families. Meet us out the front of the centre for about 30 minutes on Saturday or Sunday morning. Just want to take some flyers and help hand them out? You're welcome too.

It goes ahead if we get: at least 4 families for photos and 2 parent quotes. Quotes can be typed right here, even if you can't come. We'll confirm the day and time in the WhatsApp group.

What's happening?

On 19 October, families at the YMCA Acacia Ridge Early Education Centre were told by email that it will close for good on Friday 18 December.

We're not asking the YMCA to keep running it. We're asking it not to close the door on a handover, so our children and their educators can stay together.

  • A Queensland not-for-profit childcare provider has said it would like to speak with the YMCA directly. There's no commitment yet.
  • The YMCA wrote on 5 November that it is "not pursuing a service transfer" and has given notice to surrender the centre's service approval. Once surrendered, an approval is cancelled and can't be handed on.
  • The YMCA's centre at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital was handed to a new provider instead of closing. Families are asking: why not Acacia Ridge?
  • 22 of the 24 families who answered our survey would stay if a new provider took over.
What families are asking forThe YMCA to share the centre's figures with the interested provider under a confidentiality agreement, and to suspend the approval instead of surrendering it, so a handover can be properly looked at.
